Spring is approaching (well, it’s already here in college-speak), so now’s the time to explore those spring awakenings. My course, Intro to Online Journalism, is offered through UMassOnline’s award-winning Certificate of Journalism program. Class begins Jan. 19, you can register through Jan. 31.

With today’s online news, Facebook, Twitter and mobile phones are becoming more relevant than TV and radio. Digital storytelling, blogging, micro-blogging, and social media affect how people get their news. Class members will survey current trends in the online space and in mainstream media to see what works and what does not work for consumers. Writing for the web, content development, and Web site optimization will be examined through a news lens. Students will explore basic HTML programming, the fundamentals of graphic design and semiotics of information design for online publications. Selected readings are provided, but students are expected to be familiar with a variety of online publications.

Part of the Certificate of Journalism (offered online) but open to all.

This class session runs Jan 19-May 4.
Registration is open until January 31.
